Co-Op Cyber Attack: Second Major UK Retailer Targeted

The Co-Op Group has confirmed a cyber attack on its systems, making it the second major UK retailer hit by hackers in recent weeks. This follows an ongoing cybersecurity incident at Marks & Spencer (M&S), which has disrupted online orders for over a week.

The Co-Op cyber attack forced the retailer to shut down some back-office and call centre operations as a precaution. However, stores, online services, and funeral care businesses remain operational.

Co-Op spokesperson stated:
“We have experienced attempts to gain unauthorised access to our systems. We have taken proactive steps to protect our infrastructure.”

Marks & Spencer Still Recovering from Cyber Attack

While the Co-Op breach appears contained, M&S continues to struggle with its cybersecurity crisis. The retailer has paused online clothing and homeware orders since the attack began, impacting sales during a peak summer shopping period.

Experts suspect ransomware is behind the M&S cyber attack, with reports linking it to Scattered Spider, a notorious hacking group.

Rising Cyber Threats Against UK Businesses

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit are investigating both incidents. These attacks highlight the growing risk of ransomware and data breaches targeting UK businesses.

Nathaniel Jones, VP of Security at Darktrace, warns that groups like Scattered Spider use advanced tactics, including:

  • Phishing scams

  • MFA bombing (multi-factor authentication fatigue attacks)

  • SIM swapping

What’s Next for UK Retail Cybersecurity?

With cyber attacks on UK retailers increasing, businesses must strengthen defenses against ransomware gangs and data breaches. The Co-Op and M&S incidents serve as a stark reminder of the financial and reputational risks posed by hackers.

For now, the Co-Op cyber attack remains under control, but the M&S disruption shows how prolonged these incidents can be. Authorities urge businesses to enhance cybersecurity measures to prevent future breaches.
