DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has addressed the controversial firing of Henry Cavill as Superman, calling the situation “really unfair” to the actor.<\/p>\n

How Cavill\u2019s Superman Return Fell Apart
\nCavill first donned the cape in 2013\u2019s Man of Steel and reprised the role in 2016\u2019s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2021\u2019s Zack Snyder\u2019s Justice League.<\/p>\n

In October 2022, after a cameo in Black Adam, Cavill announced his return as Superman\u2014only for DC Studios to reverse the decision months later when Gunn and Peter Safran took over.<\/p>\n

Gunn\u2019s Candid Admission
\nOn the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn revealed:<\/p>\n

“The day we were finalizing our DC deal, they announced Henry was back. I was like, \u2018What\u2019s going on?\u2019 We already had our Superman plans. It was really unfair to him.”<\/p>\n

He blamed studio chaos at the time, saying:<\/p>\n

“There was a vacuum, and people were pushing their own agendas. Henry got caught in the middle.”<\/p>\n

Despite the abrupt exit, Gunn praised Cavill as an “absolute gentleman”, recalling:<\/p>\n

“He only asked to break the news himself\u2014no leaks. That\u2019s a class act.”<\/p>\n

Could Cavill Return to the DCU?
\nGunn hinted at future possibilities, saying:<\/p>\n

“I\u2019d love to work with Henry. We talked about it that day.”<\/p>\n

However, the new DC Universe (DCU) has moved on, with David Corenswet starring in Superman (2025). The film has earned 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising Corenswet\u2019s fresh take (read reviews here).<\/p>\n

Cavill\u2019s Graceful Exit
\nIn a classy Instagram post, Cavill wrote:<\/p>\n

“After being told to announce my return, this news isn\u2019t easy\u2014but I respect James and Peter\u2019s vision. I wish them luck.”<\/p>\n
